CHICAGO - Howard Brown, in conjunction with the National LGBT Tobacco Control Network and the Fenway Institute at Fenway Community Health in Boston, has released a new book, How to Run a Culturally Competent LGBT Smoking Treatment Group. This 20-page book distills lessons learned from more than 20 LGBT treatment groups run across the country as part of an American Legacy Foundation research project. Information is given on how to set up staffing, conduct outreach, tailor a curriculum and find other resources. The last chapter of the book includes a bonus, low-effort recipe to evaluate any tobacco treatment group complete with model evaluation forms.

At a time when the LGBT community is targeted for increased consumption, this book is important for a number of reasons:

* There is increased awareness of the disproportionate impact of smoking in the LGBT communities;
* More people, organizations and state departments of health are looking to provide culturally competent efforts to counter it; and
* This is the first document that gives in depth instructions on how to run a tobacco treatment group that is tailored for the LGBT community.

Scout, PhD, an LGBT health consultant specializing in tobacco and transgender health issues, was the project director. Scout has been involved in a number of national tobacco control efforts for the LGBT communities and is currently the Director of the National LGBT Tobacco Control Network. According to Scout, “We didn’t plan to make this book at first, but people kept calling us to give them this information one by one, so we learned how valuable these lessons learned were to others. Now I just hope this book helps other organizations start their own LGBT tobacco treatment groups because too many people don’t have access to one. We know LGBTs have been targeted to start smoking, now I just want us to be targeted for quitting too.”
